Video-EEG: a key examination for diagnosing epilepsy

The video electroencephalogram (video-EEG) is a crucial test that records the brain’s electrical activity to detect possible epileptic abnormalities. This examination is completely painless and safe for children.

How it works?

Explanation and preparation
Before starting, we take the time to explain the procedure to both the child and their parents. We reassure the child by showing them the equipment and explaining that the sensors (electrodes) are painless and only serve to record brain activity.
Electrode placement
We place a special cap on the child’s head and connect electrodes to an EEG machine. This setup continuously records brain activity while a video monitors the child for any associated clinical signs.
Stimulation tests
– Hyperventilation: the child is asked to breathe deeply and rapidly for a few minutes. This can sometimes trigger epileptic abnormalities, helping with diagnosis.
– Photostimulation: a flashing light at different frequencies is used to analyze the brain’s response to visual stimuli.
Recording during wakefulness and sleep
After the tests, the child is encouraged to take a nap since sleep can reveal certain epileptic abnormalities that may not be visible while awake.
Analysis of results
The recording is then carefully analyzed by our pediatric neurologist, Dr. Dayer, who holds a specialized EEG neurophysiology certification (SGKN). This expertise ensures an accurate and reliable diagnosis tailored to each child’s needs.

How can I prepare my child for a video EEG?

Before the appointment for a video-EEG you will receive a telephone call from our EEG nurse. She’ll explain how the test works, and ask you a few questions to help you to adapt the test to your child’s specific needs. You will also receive a document explaining the video-EEG procedure to you and your child.
